Genesis is a South Korean luxury automobile brand established by Hyundai Motor Company in November 2015. Its name came from Hyundai’s Genesis premium sedan, introduced in 2008; that model evolved into the G80 after Genesis became a separate marque. The brand debuted with the EQ900—sold internationally as the G90—and built a sedan range around the G90, G80, and compact G70. The rear-wheel-drive-based G70 earned particular enthusiast attention and major North American car-of-the-year honors, while the GV80 and GV70 marked Genesis’s expansion into luxury SUVs beginning in 2020. Genesis later added battery-electric vehicles, including the GV60 and electrified versions of established models. As Korea’s first dedicated luxury automotive brand, Genesis represents Hyundai’s effort to compete independently in the global premium market, using a distinct winged badge, alphanumeric model names, and a Korean-influenced design identity.
